Welcome to the flock!

Formerly Scrapbook Design & You® this comprehensive program started with one passionate scrapbook retailer who wanted to show her customers how fun and easy scrapbooking could be. When Joy discovered that traditional scrapbook classes did not teach how to develop a strong scrapbook foundation, she set out to write her own curriculum. Joy's philosophy is "there is no wrong way to scrapbook, but if you know the fundamental theories and techniques, you will be empowered to create any page with your own style."

What began over a decade ago with core scrapbooking classes has now expanded into a full range of craft curriculum. From papercrafting and jewelry making, to needlecrafts and home d├ęcor, Spotted Canary School is the source for inspiration and education! Whether you take a class online or at one of our retail partners by a Certified Instructor; everything you need to bring out your creative side is here at Spotted Canary School.

"Crafting at the Spotted Canary," hosted by TV personality and crafting expert Joy Macdonell, is a 30-minute PBS series that explores the always creative, sometimes messy techniques adults and children can enjoy while experimenting with contemporary crafts.

Each show highlights three projects, providing viewers with start-to-finish, easy-to-follow guidelines. People often look at beautiful craftwork and wonder, 'How in the world did they do that?' That's the question we'll answer on 'Crafting at the Spotted Canary,'" Macdonell says. "Viewers will quickly realize that everyone makes mistakes - and those mistakes can be wonderful. What we didn't intend to do may be exactly what we need. It's pure self-expression." "Crafting at the Spotted Canary" is produced by KS Inc. Productions in conjunction with EK Success Brands, the leading craft company in the industry. This television series is an extension of EK Success Brands' popular comprehensive crafting website. • A 4-part education series for every skill level.
  • A chance to get acquainted with the tools of the trade.
  • The opportunity to learn successful color selection & layout design theory.
  • An appreciation for the importance of journaling, hand lettering and titles in design.
  • New techniques for matting photos, getting stickers out of the collections, and giving new life to punches.
  • A certificate of completion upon finishing the entire course.
The curriculum starts at the very beginning! In these classes you will learn about the emotional value of scrapbooking along with the basics on how to plan and prepare for a scrapbook project. These classes present the foundation for beginners while exposing advanced students to view scrapbooking in a whole new light.

By the time you have completed the entire course you will be well versed in how to develop strong layout designs. The SDU booklet will be a valuable reference tool as you continue your scrapbooking journey.

1. Scrapbook Basics

In Scrapbook Basics, discover the inspiration that comes from creating scrapbooks. This class will orient all levels of papercrafters to the tools of the trade, practical organization and the elements of scrapbook design. Learn step-by-step how to create focus and unity through a variety of matting techniques, and leave class with a full understanding of the elemental components of scrapbooking.

2. Building Blocks of Design

A working knowledge of color theory and its relation to designing scrapbook pages is essential to the development of well structured layouts. Combining this understanding with the building blocks (photographs, journaling, titles, enhancements, color, line, letter and shape) and the principles of design structure will assist scrapbookers in the creation of strong layouts that complete a balanced and unified story.

3. The Power of the Pen

A picture is not always worth a thousand words. It is vital that every scrapbook designer develop an appreciation for the integration of the written word on a scrapbook page. The Power of the Pen will provide students with basic writing techniques and exercises to assist in the development of engaging titles and impact filled journal entries. Additionally, students will begin to understand the influence that hand lettering has on their reader, and how to incorporate their personal script into each design.

4. The Final Touch

Embellishing scrapbook pages is a true testament in the development of a papercrafter's design process. Page enhancements such as titles, stickers and punch art, allow the designer to create balance, rhythm, movement, contrast and depth with a layout. Design spectacular titles, learn techniques that give new vitality to your collection of stickers, develop knowledge of punch maintenance and the incorporation of punch art design in layout design.
